In November 1987, I entered a KHAR Radio contest in which contestants
sent in poems. At this point I don't remember if the poems were supposed
to be about Thanksgiving or the frozen goose which was the prize. Mark
told me about this contest; one entry was chose each week and read on the
air. I decided to send in an entry during the second winter I lived
in Alaska. I was shocked when I heard that I had won. Below
the Contest Entry is a letter of thanks I sent to the station manager along
with another poem.
KHAR THANKSGIVING GOOSE CONTEST ENTRY
by Virginia H. Lane
Anchorage AK
Thanksgiving is before us.
I'd like to prepare
But WHAT will I feed us
With the cupboards so bare?
In the freezer I have fish,
Or cheese toast may be had.
Even scrambled eggs in a dish
Would not be so bad.
It's a meal without guilt
When not a penny is owed
Than be charged to the hilt
Eating on the borrowed.
My relatives down South
Would like us to see
But....
Don't be down in the mouth
At least,
Hungry we won't be.
We'll stay home and have fish,
Corned beef, or maybe moose.
But--Oh, how I wish--
For a KHAR goose!

Dear Mr. Clement:
As one of the winners of the recent KHAR Thanksgiving goose contest, I
can hardly begin to express my appreciation. I had been depressed and frustrated
with the onset of winter and the continued lack of funds. Being a contest
winner perked me up and made our Thanksgiving special. My husband and I
have added goose to our list of desirable meals.
I have written the enclosed poem to express some of my emotions to date.
Please share it with Mr. Gaines. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Virginia H. Lane

A YEAR IN RETROSPECT
by Virginia H. Lane
Anchorage AK
This past year was a year
Without a penny to spare
Balancing the budget
Oh-What a care!
Without my mother-in-law
Who's such a dear
It would have been
A very bad year
Times would have been
So very, very bleak
She helped fill the fridge
From week to week.
And Thanksgiving dinner
Might have been grim
For having a big turkey
Was a possibility so dim.
But I decided to take
A different tack
To enter a contest
That started way back.
A cute little poem
I wrote one day
To try for a goose
The KHAR way.
My neighbor did hear it
When the announcement came
She could hardly believe
When called was my name
So on Thanksgiving we dined
Not on eggs or moose
Oh, how blessed we were
With a KHAR goose.
