Bring
Back the Joy --- B B t J . O r g

This skit was originally performed by students from Charis Bible College during our mission trip to Ciudad Victoria, Mexico.  We performed the skit in English with the introduction included below at the End of School Party at Charis Bible College.

THE GOOD SAMARITAN:  Luke 10:30-37

Cast:  Jewish man
    Thief 1
    Thief 2
    Priest
    Levite/temple assistant
    Good Samaritan
    Inn Keeper
    Narrator
(Translator:  In Mexico, the narrator only gave an introduction and first introductory speech.  The translator read the passages in Luke during the remainder of the skit as the action occurred on the stage.)

Introduction:  Mission trips are one of the growing experiences of CBC.  At the beginning of the school year, the students who went to Scotland showed you the skits they planned to give during their street ministry.  Those of us who went to Mexico were encouraged to plan skits.  We wanted to show you one of the skits that we did in the evening tent service in Cuidad Victoria .  Part of doing skits is to make do with what is available for props or costumes.   I'd like you all to use your imaginations to pretend that you are Mexican citizens and that the narrator is speaking in Spanish while the acting is being done by a team from Charis Bible College in the United States.

Narrator:  Today's teaching is from Luke 10:30-37.    Someone asked Jesus "Who is my neighbor?"   Jesus told this story as an illustration.

Narrator:   v30  A Jewish man was traveling on a trip from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes and money, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road.

Action:  A Jewish man comes strolling along from stage left.  Two thieves attack him.  He puts up a good fight but they beat him and take his hat, coat and money.  He is left lying in the center of the stage.

Narrator:  v31 "By chance a Jewish priest came along; but when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by.

Action:  A Priest comes walking by from Stage Left.  He walks around the injured man.

Narrator:  v32 A Temple assistant walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side.

Action:  Another man strolls across the stage from Stage Right.  He also ignores the injured man.

Narrator:  v33 "Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt deep pity.

Action:  The Samaritan comes from Stage Left and sees the wounded man.  He is compassionate.

Narrator:  v34 Kneeling beside him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with medicine and bandaged them.

Action:  The Samaritan picks up the Jewish man, whips out a handkerchief and scarf  to wrap up head.

Narrator:  Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him.

Action:  The Samaritan  and the Jew walk back toward Stage left and then come back toward center stage where the innkeeper has come forward.  At first the innkeep didn't want to take in the Jew.   He shakes his head no but then finally allows them in.  The Jewish man sinks to the floor (as if he is in bed).

Narrator:  v35  The next day he handed the innkeeper two pieces of silver and told him to take care of the man. `If his bill runs higher than that,' he said, `I'll pay the difference the next time I am here.'

Action:  The Samaritan gives the innkeeper several coins.  The innkeeper is ingratiating and then waves goodbye as the Samaritan leaves by walking toward Stage Right.

Narrator looks at the audience:

Narrator:  v36  "Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?" Jesus asked.

Narrator:  v37  The response was:  "The one who showed him mercy."  (Pause)  Then Jesus said, "Yes, now go and do the same."
