Thus Saith the Lord? by John Bevere
A Book Review by Virginia H. Lane

Have you ever wondered if God speaks to people?  And if he does, how does he do it?  Is it a mysterious thing or something which everyone can understand?  Thus Saith the Lord? addresses prophetic words in modern times.

One common method in which we hear from God is His speaking through other people.  We are all familiar with times when a pastor may say something in a sermons which quickens in your spirit.  Or your friend says something that "speaks to you."  In Thus Saith the Lord?, John Bevere addresses a message spoken through a Prophet.  This is someone who has an anointing from God and receives words from the spiritual realm about a person and their life, present or future.

Well known prophets in the Bible were Moses, Samuel and Elijah.  Old Testament prophets addressed the activities of the nations.  Today, most prophesies are for specific people.  Bevere addresses how one can recognize a true prophet from a false prophet and how to decide one's response to what was said.

Bevere gives considerations for deciding if oneself has the prophetic gift.  This is an important gift which can be seriously misused.  Some prophecies are meant only for the prophet while others should be delivered to the person.  A prophet needs to listen to the Holy Spirit for instructions on how to use the gift.

Thus Saith the Lord? gives many examples of good prophecies which enriched the lives of the hearers.  He also addresses false prophecies which did more harm than good.  False prophecies may be that because of how they are said or they are spoken out of fleshly knowledge or motivation.  False prophecies do not necessarily come from the Satanic realm.  Bevere supports his beliefs from scripture.

This book answers many questions concerning prophets and the use of personal prophecy from the mouths of prophets.  It opened other questions in my mind concerning hearing God's voice for myself.  Other methods from hearing from God are not addressed in this book.  Thus Saith the Lord? might be confusing for someone who is new to the topic of personal prophecy.  I believe it would be a good resource for those who have seen it in operation and want more information.

The front cover of this book has an additional note (subtitle) of "How to know when God is speaking to you through another."

The back cover says:

How do you know when God is speaking?  Today, there is an insatiable hunger for the prophetic word of the Lord.  Christians are eager to receive "words from the Lord" and to share them.  Along with the genuine desire for the real comes a vulnerability to excessive or counterfeit prophetic ministry.

Too often, modern "prophets" stream through our churches, fellowships, and homes giving words almost like fortune-tellers.  But is God really speaking?

In this insightful and eye-opening book, respected author and teacher John Bevere shares with you:
* How to accurately discern prophecy
* How false prophecy can be accurate with your past and present, but miss your future
* How counterfeit prophecy leaves you fruitless
* How to discern a true prophet from a false prophet
* How to respond when a word is not from God
* How to be led by the Spirit and more

Not only will you learn how to recognize the voice of the Lord more clearly, but you'll be more confident in accurately handling true prophetic words.  If you hunger to know God more fully, if you have ever been prophesied to or been used in the prophetic ministry, then you will want to read Thus Saith the Lord?
